Sorry, not sorry ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So many times I hear clients apologize - for not completing a set, for struggling with a new exercise, etc...

And I say the same thing each time - "You don't ever need to apologize to me!"

Here are some journaling prompts to consider if apologizing for yourself is a habit you've created in your own life -

  • Why do you feel the need to apologize when things don't go as anticipated?

  • Could it be the result of the expectations you set for yourself?

  • Or is it perhaps a result of expectations others have set for you?

  • Who are you really apologizing to? for?

  • If you were to take a pause, would you respond differently?

  • What lesson could you stand to learn in that moment?

  • What are the patterns we've been practicing when it comes to our self-worth?

  • How is this related to your impulse to apologize for your words? ... actions? ... performance?

  • Is there room to be easier on yourself?

  • Is there any long-held guilt/shame/sadness you can revisit and let go of?

  • What might that make room for?

If you find yourself experiencing apologetic behaviors, take a pause. Think about how it makes you feel, and how you might respond differently in the future.

Above all, don't feel badly about apologizing! Just take the time to reflect on it, and maybe practice trying a new response :)
