Clean Eating - Understanding Healthy Fats

Fat is an important macronutrient that our body NEEDS to stay healthy, and help regulate body temperature and provide energy. Vitamins like A, D, E and K cannot be absorbed without the assistance of fat.

I've tried low-fat diet trends in the past, and was left feeling cold and tired, without long-term success in weight loss.

AVOID Trans Fats -

Found in processed foods, meat, and dairy.

Trans fats are identified by terms like "Fractionated" and "Hydrogenated".

Raises LDL (lousy cholesterol), and lowers HDL (happy cholesterol).

Increases risk for heart disease.

Won't appear on a food label if the product contains less than .5 grams.

Limit Saturated Fats -

Found in meat and dairy products.

Raises LDL (lousy) cholesterol.

Can increase risks for heart disease.

Choose Poly and Mono Unsaturated Fats -

Found in Olive, Peanut and Canola Oils, Nuts, Avocado,

and Cold Water Fish like Salmon and Tuna.

Can help increase HDL (happy) cholesterol.
